If brushing alone were enough, gum disease would be rare. Plaque colonies form between tight teeth and under contacts where bristles never reach—floss, tape, or interdental brushes disrupt that biofilm before it hardens into tartar.
Technique basics
Use a clean segment per tooth, hug the side of each tooth in a C-shape, and slide slightly below the gumline without snapping. Water flossers help around braces or bridges but work best as an add-on, not a full substitute for contact cleaning.
Make it stick
Pair flossing with an existing habit—after your evening brush or before your shower. Even 60 seconds nightly beats occasional marathon sessions.
