Pediatric dental anxiety is common in Houston families, especially after a rushed or uncomfortable visit elsewhere. At Uptown Houston Smiles, near the Galleria, we slow down, explain each step, and invite parents to partner with us so children feel safe—not surprised.
Before the appointment
Use simple, neutral language (“we’re going to count your teeth”) instead of vague warnings. Read a short picture book about the dentist, role-play with a stuffed animal, and schedule morning visits when your child is usually rested.
Share any sensory triggers—noises, reclining, bright lights—when you book. Our front desk can note preferences so the clinical team is prepared.
- Bring a small comfort item from home
- Avoid using the visit as a threat or punishment
- Feed a light meal; hungry or overstuffed kids have a harder time cooperating
What we do chairside
We demonstrate instruments before using them, offer breaks, and celebrate small wins. Nitrous oxide is available for appropriate cases when parents and our dentists agree it will help.
